Today, it’s available for broader use, but there’s still a residency requirement: to register a .us domain, you must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, or your business/nonprofit must have a significant presence in the United States. This applies whether you’re an individual, corporation, or organization.
Originally, the .us extension was intended to serve as the online identity for U.S.-based entities, but over time it became open for commercial use.

In the U.S., however, .com effectively became the default ccTLD in practice, leaving .us in the background. American businesses often chose other alternatives—such as .co, .io, .net, or .xyz—when the perfect .com wasn’t available.
That trend is shifting. In recent years, .us has started to gain traction as a credible and appealing option, especially when the desired .com is taken. High-profile brands have embraced it, including AliExpress, Binance, Aldi, Bark, and Among Us. Notably, Zoom was an early adopter, helping raise awareness and legitimacy for the extension.
