What is the .tv ccTLD

The .tv domain extension is the ccTLD for the island nation of Tuvalu. This small island nation is located in the Pacific Ocean and proceeds from the sale of .tv domains are an important source of revenue for the country. Currently,  the Government of Tuvalu has chosen GoDaddy Registry as the newly appointed registry administrator for the TV top-level domain (ccTLD). Which means they will manage the crucial technical and operational aspects of the ccTLD. 

Popularity of the .tv domain extension

Interestingly, the GoDaddy registry also states that "our full-service offering also includes a complete rebrand and marketing makeover. For .TV, we reimagined the brand as a destination for the new generation of internet users, including content creators from Instagram influencers and TikTokkers, to YouTubers, bloggers, and Twitch streamers. The new .TV brand uses bold, energetic visuals that are familiar to our digitally native audience. The result is a fresh, fun take on a classic ccTLD that is bursting with color, while giving a nod to the retro television aesthetic". 

The thing is though, this phenomena had already taken place before GoDaddy took over as the registry admin. People had already made the association between the ccTLD and abbreviation of the word Television, thus, repurposing the domain extension to represent TV (Television).

As a result the .tv extension became popular among media and entertainment companies, as well as individuals and organizations that produce or distribute video content online. So, naturally the extension became a go to choice for blogging, YouTube, e-sports/video gamers, streamers and social media Influencers. 

Benefits of using a .tv extension

Aside from having GoDaddy as a proponent and the admin on the registry side, the .tv ccTLD has a lot of availability (domain names that can be registered) and is not nearly as saturated as other extensions such as .com, .net, .org and to some extent, .io and .co.  

In other words, many will likely be able to get the desired domain name in a .tv extension to match their brand name. This will allow those within the broadcast entertainment /video content arena to establish credibility and can help them stand out in a crowded space online.
